Last Book of 2012: The Ghost Brigades by John Scalzi. I had read Old Man's War some time ago and liked it. This is the second book in the Old Man's War universe. The book itself – well, you'd have had to have first read the first book to fully appreciate “The Ghost Brigades”. So when I was looking for some science fiction to buy for our trip to Italy, I got the sequels The Ghost Brigades and The Last Colony. This is the sequel to Old Man's War, but it's more of a tangential sequel. In The Ghost brigades, Scalzi dwelves into the Commandos of the army, the newly born commandos who might be one year old but are the best fightining machines humanity has to offer. €�The Ghost Brigades are the Special Forces of the Colonial Defense Forces, elite troops created from the DNA of the dead and turned into the perfect soldiers for the CDF's toughest operations. The book, as the title implies, follows the Ghost Brigades, Colonial Defense Forces special forces soldiers. In the follow-up to Old Man's War we find something that is both more and less than a sequel. It is it's own story, no longer following the travails of John. Ghost Brigades is the follow up to Old Man's War, which I read a while ago but apparently did not review (it's really good). I didn't like The Ghost Brigades quite as much as I liked Old Man's War, partly because the first book was such a revelation, and partly because the second book wasn't quite as funny.
